The Legend from the Rats' Perspective

While the traditional open-air play of the Pied Piper tells the classic legend in its historical form, RATS turns the perspective around. The story is retold from the viewpoint of the rats – who are the victims in the original legend. The rats see themselves as victims of unfair treatment, and the Pied Piper appears as a threat. This shift in perspective allows for witty commentary and ironic twists.

Witty Songs and Choreography

The musical relies on witty songs, choreographed scenes, and musical diversity. The mix of comedy and musical makes RATS an entertaining contribution that is particularly popular with younger audiences and families.

25 Years of Tradition

RATS premiered in 2000 and celebrates its 25th anniversary in the 2025-2026 season. This makes it an established tradition and a firm fixture in Hameln's legend program.

Wednesdays as a Regular Date

While the open-air play is performed on Sundays on the Hochzeitshaus terrace, RATS can be seen on Wednesdays — from May 27 to September 2, 2026, at 4:30 PM. This gives visitors to Hameln two different opportunities to experience the legend.

Free Admission

Like the open-air play, RATS is also free for spectators. With a running time of 45 minutes, it is ideally integrated into a day trip to Hameln.
