Germany's only underground Christmas market in the historic wine cellars of Traben-Trarbach
In the 19th century, Traben-Trarbach was the second-largest wine trading center in Europe after Bordeaux. An extensive system of underground cellars was dug beneath the city to store the enormous quantities of wine traded here. These cellars still exist today – and they form the unique backdrop for the Mosel Wine Night Market, Germany's only underground Christmas market.
Anyone entering the historic vaults enters a completely different world: old masonry, subdued light, candlelight, wine barrels, the scent of mulled wine and roasted almonds. The exhibitors are spread across several cellar corridors, creating an intimate, almost theatrical atmosphere – light-years away from the large, noisy, and commercial Christmas markets in city centers.
The program combines international exhibitors with crafts, jewelry, fashion, and decoration with a strong regional focus on Mosel wine and culinary specialties. Mulled wine from regional vines, Riesling ice wine, Mosel sparkling wine, roasted specialties, Schiefertaler ham, cheese, bread, cakes, and sweets are the culinary highlights.
In addition to the market itself, the Mosel Wine Night Market cooperates with the city's hotels, restaurants, and wellness providers. Wine-wellness packages, themed menus, and special tours complement the market visit, turning the weekend into a short holiday in the mid-Mosel winter.
Unlike most Christmas markets, the Mosel Wine Night Market is not open daily but only on weekends (Friday to Sunday) and special opening days. The concept preserves the intimate atmosphere and ensures that exhibitors and visitors experience a special quality of encounter.
The 2026/27 edition continues the market's unique concept. Over six weekends (plus special opening days), the historic wine cellars are transformed into an Advent landscape.
The participating exhibitors partially change from weekend to weekend, so each visit offers a slightly different mix. Regional gastronomy integrates the Mosel Wine Night Market into special hotel and restaurant packages.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in the fall. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
