Knights' tournament, minstrels, and Easter market on the famous Loreley rock above the Rhine Valley
The Easter Spectacle on the Loreley is one of the most atmospheric medieval festivals in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage site. High above the bend in the Rhine, where legend says the Loreley once lured sailors to their doom, the tents of knights, craftsmen, and minstrels are pitched for three days.
The highlight of each day is the grand knights' tournament: heavily armored riders compete in jousts and melees, fight sword duels, and demonstrate the horsemanship of the High Middle Ages. The grandstands around the tournament field offer a clear view of the spectacle, while the herald introduces the audience to the world of coats of arms and heroes.
At the extensive Easter market, craftsmen present their art: blacksmiths work at the forge, potters shape jugs on the wheel, glassblowers form delicate pendants. Merchants offer furs, felt goods, mead, spices, and medieval jewelry. Bakers bake stick bread, suckling pigs and ham hocks are roasted over open fires.
Minstrels roam the plateau with bagpipes, shawms, and drums, jugglers perform fire-eating and juggling feats, and storytellers take children on journeys into ancient Rhine sagas. Those who appear in historical costume pay a reduced admission – a cherished custom that shapes the atmosphere of the festival.
The location on the Loreley rock, with views of Sankt Goarshausen, Katz Castle, and the passing ship traffic, makes the Easter Spectacle an experience that goes far beyond a classic medieval market.
The 2026 edition of the Easter Spectacle seamlessly integrates into the festive rhythm of the World Heritage Valley. For three days, the Loreley rock relives the customs, battles, and sounds of the Middle Ages. The organizers once again rely on the proven mix of action-packed knightly combats, relaxed market strolls, and a rich culinary offering.
Families will find plenty of space to explore on the plateau, while the panorama over the Rhine and the surrounding castles provides an unparalleled backdrop.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
