Three-day Volksfest on the Rhine embankment in Mainz's Mombach district with a keg tapping ceremony and closing fireworks
The Mainz district of Mombach is located west of the city, directly on the Rhine embankment and at the mouth of the industrial harbor. Historically an independent municipality – Mombach has only been part of Mainz since 1907 – the district maintains a distinct sense of identity with its own clubs, festivals, and landmarks to this day. The Mombach Rhine Embankment Festival is one of the most important manifestations of this identity.
The organizer is the association Schöneres Mombach e.V., which is responsible for district work, beautification, event organization, and the cooperation of local clubs. Over a weekend in late May, the festival brings together the energy of numerous Mombach clubs: carnival societies, sports clubs, the fire brigade band, mothers' centers, and schools are represented with their own stalls, offerings, and program items.
The festival extends spatially along the Mombach Rhine Embankment, offering views of the rushing current and the Wiesbaden heights opposite. The festival grounds feature a stage with a daily changing program – music, dance, club performances – as well as a variety of stalls, beer tents, and amusement rides. For children, a climbing wall, bouncy castle, face painting, and small competitions are organized.
Three program points are considered set: the ceremonial opening on Friday evening with the weekend's first stage music; the keg tapping on Saturday by an official representative of the City of Mainz or a prominent Mombach personality; and the closing fireworks on Sunday evening over the Rhine – a spectacle that attracts thousands of onlookers from the entire region and concludes the festival in a fitting manner.
The Mombach Rhine Embankment Festival is free to enter and is one of those festivals that make the sense of belonging to the district tangible within a large city like Mainz. Anyone seeking an authentic impression of Mombach's Mainz should visit this weekend.
The 2026 program will be published by the organizer Schöneres Mombach e.V. in the spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: Friday evening opening with the first stage music, Saturday daytime program with club performances, sports competitions, and the ceremonial keg tapping in the late afternoon, Sunday ecumenical service, daytime program with family activities, and closing fireworks over the Rhine. The stage, beer tents, food stalls, and children's play areas will be open all three days.
Final program and band selection available at schoeneresmombach.de.
