Three days of medieval market at Gelterswoog Lake for Easter weekend with jousting tournament and fire show
The Gelterswoog is a picturesque reservoir in the Palatinate Forest, northwest of Kaiserslautern, located in the Erfenbach district. With surrounding walking paths, a lido, and a campsite, it is the most important recreational area for the West Palatinate capital. Twice a year, the area around the lake transforms into a medieval market – in spring for Easter weekend and in autumn usually on the first weekend of October. The spring edition in 2026 runs from Holy Saturday, April 4th, to Easter Monday, April 6th.
The centerpiece is the jousting tournament, a performance of historical equestrian techniques, lance combat, and ground combat specifically staged for a family audience. Several performances per day attract the audience to the specially constructed tournament grounds. In addition, the medieval camp, with tents, open fires, craftspeople in traditional costume, and reenactment groups, characterizes the market's appearance. Visitors can see blacksmiths, bow makers, leather workers, textile artisans, bread bakers, and other craftspeople in medieval clothing at work.
Musically, groups like Ratz Fatz and Spilldeyvel shape the market. Both formations are part of the established German medieval market scene and play a repertoire of bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, shawm, and drums, which defines the typical medieval market atmosphere. Their performances are repeated several times over the three days. In addition, smaller ensembles play at various locations on the grounds.
At dusk – which occurs early in April – the fire shows by Lux Art Feuerperformance, one of the most aesthetically sophisticated fire groups in the region, begin. With fire staffs, fire fans, and fire acrobatics, they create an impressive performance. For the youngest visitors, the children's magician William and several storytellers are on hand, performing on smaller stages or in storytelling corners, making the Middle Ages accessible to children.
