Düsseldorf-Unterrath — the Northern District
Unterrath is located in the north of Düsseldorf, in the 6th district, between the airport and the city center. A rather unassuming residential area with a historic village core, average rental prices, and good public transport links — an unusual backdrop for a Punk and Metal festival. It is precisely this casualness that makes the Meti Festival appealing: instead of large festival grounds in the middle of nowhere, Meti brings loud music to a district that otherwise has no festival activity — thus making a statement for the cultural diversity of urban spaces.
The Schützenplatz Unterrath as a Festival Venue
The festival venue is the Schützenplatz Unterrath at Kartäuserstr. 70. The square, used by the local shooting fraternity (Schützenbruderschaft) throughout the year, transforms into an open-air festival area for one weekend in August: main stage, sound system, bar stands, food trucks, seating areas, and a dedicated accessible area. The size is manageable — Meti expects a few thousand visitors per festival day, allowing for direct interaction between artists and the audience.
Punk, Metal, Hardcore, Rock — the Musical Identity
The musical profile is clearly defined: Punk, Metal, Hardcore, and Rock — with a focus on the German and European scene, but also featuring international acts. What sets Meti apart from other Metal and Punk festivals is its political positioning: the festival clearly takes a stand against right-wing extremism, against discrimination, and for diversity within the scene. This attitude is manifested in the choice of bands, the selection of partner initiatives, and the overall festival culture.
Political Partners — KeinBockAufNazis and Hardcore Help
Two partner initiatives particularly shape the Meti Festival:
KeinBockAufNazis
A nationwide initiative against right-wing extremism in the music scene. At Meti, KeinBockAufNazis has its own stand, promoting a clear stance with actions and informational material.
Hardcore Help Foundation
An NGO that supports humanitarian projects within the Hardcore and Metal scene — from medical aid in crisis regions to social assistance programs. Meti donates a portion of the ticket proceeds to the Foundation.
Accessibility — A Special Focus
Unlike many festivals of its genre, Meti places explicit emphasis on accessibility: there is a completely barrier-free area with a view of the stage, accessible toilets, and consistently paved access. A choice that is not standard in the Metal and Punk scene, earning Meti a reputation as a "festival for everyone".
Food Trucks and Drinks
Food is provided by food trucks — not classic festival catering, but a selection of specialized providers: vegan burgers, various fries, Asian bowls, traditional snacks. The beverage stands are operated by the festival itself — no corporate concessions, but their own bar crews, often from the local scene.
