Four days of Kerwe at the FC Gräfenstein sports grounds with carousels, football, and dancing
FC Gräfenstein Merzalben is the village's central sports club and has been the organizer of the most important festival for decades: the Merzalber Kerwe. Its sports grounds become the festival backdrop once a year: the grandstand turns into the festival tent, the club room into the catering area, and the pitch into the dance floor or the location for the carousels. This combination of sport and tradition gives the Merzalber Kerwe its unique character.
A special feature of the Merzalber Kerwe is the combination of fairground attractions and club sports. While the carousels and fairground rides represent the classic Volksfest element, football matches or sports events organized by the FC are often part of the program – veterans' tournaments, youth games, friendly matches. Thus, the Kerwe also becomes a stage for the village's sports activities.
Like all Palatinate Kerwen, the Merzalber Kerwe follows the classic structure: opening on Saturday, festival day with dancing, Frühschoppen, and Kerweredd on Sunday, and a convivial closing on Monday and Tuesday. The Kerweredd on Sunday – the humorously ironic festival speech in Palatinate dialect – is a highlight for the locals, who use it to review the events of the village year.
The catering follows Palatinate tradition: Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Flammkuchen (tarte flambée), Wurstsalat (sausage salad). Accompanied by draft beer, Palatinate wine, and Schorle (wine mixed with sparkling water). Musically, the spectrum ranges from brass band music during the Frühschoppen to dance music and cover bands for the younger generation on Saturday evening.
Merzalben is located in the Palatinate Forest Nature Park, directly at the foot of Gräfenstein Castle – one of the most beautiful castle ruins in the Palatinate, with its striking keep visible from afar. A visit to the Merzalber Kerwe can be ideally combined with a hike up to the castle: a short, rewarding walk offering a wide view over the Palatinate Forest.
The Kerwe is organized by FC Gräfenstein Merzalben together with the local clubs. Current program details can be found on fc-merzalben.de.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in advance. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
