100 km in 24 hours or new 50 km night variant in 12 hours — extreme hike through the Weserbergland circuit
The Megamarsch is a format by Berliner Megamarsch GmbH, which has been organizing 100-kilometer extreme hikes in 24 hours in various regions of Germany since 2017. The event combines athletic competition, shared experience, and nature exploration. Unlike marathons, this is not a race but a focused hike — walking is mandatory, running is allowed, and breaks are possible at any time. The route is clearly marked, with refreshment and sanitary stations along the way.
The classic is 100 kilometers in 24 hours; new in 2026 is a 50-kilometer variant in 12 hours, which is run at night. This addition acknowledges that not all hikers can or want to tackle the full 100 km — 50 km in the dark is also a serious challenge with its own unique appeal: silence, moonlight, dimmed headlamp, constant concentration.
The start and finish line is Rinteln's market square in the Schaumburg district. From there, the route forms a large circuit through the Weserbergland: to Hohenrode, over the Taubenberg, on to Hemeringen, through the Süntel ridge, down the Auetal, and back to Rinteln via the Wesergebirge. With approximately 1,200 meters of elevation gain, the route is topographically demanding. It crosses the Hameln-Pyrmont district, including the municipal areas of Hameln, Aerzen, and Emmerthal. The natural landscapes range from mixed forests to meadows and fields, as well as rock formations and viewpoints.
Refreshment points will be set up along the route — typically every 8 to 12 kilometers. Water, isotonic drinks, bananas, cereal bars, bread rolls, soup, and bread will be available. Medical support is organized, and sanitary facilities are marked. Those who drop out can exit at designated points, and a shuttle will take them back to the finish.
The start is on Saturday, June 13th, 2026, at 3:00 PM on Rinteln's market square. The 100 km hikers have until Sunday, June 14th, 3:00 PM to reach the finish. The 50 km variant also starts at 3:00 PM and has a 12-hour time limit, meaning until 3:00 AM the next morning. Finishing earlier also counts as completing the challenge.
Every hiker who reaches the finish within the time limit receives a finisher medal and a functional shirt. The success rate is typically between 40 and 60 percent — the event is demanding and requires good preparation for the distance and topography. Even completing parts of it provides a lifelong experience.
In 2026, the Megamarsch Weserbergland is expanding its offering with a 50 km night variant. Both variants start at 3:00 PM on Rinteln's market square. Detailed information about the route and refreshments is available on the organizer's website.
