Historic medieval market in the backdrop of Schloss Martinsburg in Lahnstein in September
Lahnstein offers a unique feature not found in many other towns on the Middle Rhine: Schloss Martinsburg, a castle complex in the heart of Niederlahnstein, whose walls, courtyard, and surroundings are excellently suited as a backdrop for historical events.
The medieval market utilizes this setting on a September weekend for a two-day program full of crafts, music, camp life, and market activities. Craftspeople from the supra-regional medieval scene will showcase their skills: blacksmiths will work at open forges, leatherworkers will craft with awls and straps, bow makers, potters, glassblowers, and felt workshops will present their pieces.
At the market, stalls offering jewelry, leather goods, furs, mead, spices, medieval clothing, and curiosities will alternate. Minstrels will roam the grounds with bagpipes, drums, and shawms, while jugglers will perform fire-eating, juggling, and fakir arts.
An important component of the market is the camp life: groups from medieval reenactment will set up their tents, cook over open fires, practice sword fighting, or provide insights into the daily life of various medieval estates β from farmers and craftspeople to knights.
At medieval taverns, mead, beer, wine, and hearty dishes will be served β suckling pig, stews, and stick bread. Those who arrive in historical attire will immerse themselves even deeper into the atmosphere.
The 2026 edition continues the successful format of previous years. Schloss Martinsburg offers a compact, atmospherically dense backdrop that makes immersion into the historical world particularly intense.
