Three days of camp life, crafts, knight tournaments, and medieval music on the shores of Vörder See
The Vörder See is the tranquil heart of the town of Bremervörde. Once a year, the Medieval Festival transforms the lakeside promenade into a historical camp with tents, campfires, blacksmiths, and workshops. Reenactment groups from all over Northern Germany arrive with historical equipment and authentically convey everyday life in the Middle Ages.
At the craft stalls, visitors can watch blacksmiths, turners, leatherworkers, basket weavers, bow makers, felt makers, and potters at work and try many things themselves. The craftspeople explain their techniques, tools, and materials and introduce visitors to forgotten skills. Children can lend a hand under supervision, pull candles, shape felt, or make small leather pouches.
Several show combat groups demonstrate historical fighting techniques with swords, shields, lances, and bows. Knight tournaments with horses, archery competitions, and foot combat demonstrations captivate the audience. The demonstrations are moderated and explained so that visitors can understand the historical context.
Minstrels and bands with medieval instruments such as hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, shawms, and drums provide the musical accompaniment. Storytellers, jugglers, and fire-eaters perform in the breaks between the main programme items. In the evening, campfire music and dancing shape the atmosphere.
The market offers a wide range of medieval goods: garments, jewellery, shoes, drinking horns, books, furs, candles, incense, and much more. The catering is also historically themed: mead, dark beer, spit-roasted meats, bread from wood-fired ovens, stews, and herbal honey characterise the culinary offerings.
Reenactment groups from Northern Germany will set up their tents on the shores of Vörder See, creating an authentic medieval camp. Craftsmen, minstrels, knights, and market stalls shape the atmosphere.
Knight tournaments, show fights, archery, musical performances, storytelling for children, evening campfire concerts, and nighttime illumination with torches and fire bowls characterise the festival weekend.
