12th Medieval Christmas Market in front of the Alexanderkirche Wildeshausen — Mead, suckling pig, crafts, and shows from December 11th to 13th, 2026
The Medieval Christmas Market Wildeshausen will take place in its twelfth edition in 2026 from Friday, December 11th to Sunday, December 13th, in front of the Alexanderkirche. The Nordisches Marktvolk transforms the forecourt of the city church into a medieval camp: mead, beer, suckling pig, and stick bread are prepared over open fires, craftsmen demonstrate medieval techniques, and musicians and actors shape the acoustic landscape.
The market runs parallel to the main Wildeshausen Christmas Market in the market square (December 11th–20th, 2026) — both complement each other spatially. Free admission.
The Nordisches Marktvolk is a North German group of medieval market organizers specializing in historical markets with thematically coherent staging. With detailed tents, costumes, lighting, and a consistent program, the Marktvolk aims to convey the medieval atmosphere not as folklore, but as a craft-based, serious production.
At the stand of the Marktvolk and the participating craftspeople, blacksmithing, leatherwork, felting, woodturning, and other historical techniques are demonstrated. Shows — such as fire eaters and stilt walkers — complete the program. Music rounds out the picture: hurdy-gurdy, shawm, drum.
Culinary, the market focuses on classic elements: hot mead over an open fire, medieval beer, suckling pig from the spit, stick bread. This combination is the standard signature of medieval Christmas markets and attracts an audience seeking the atmosphere of another millennium.
The late Romanesque Alexanderkirche, with its historical church building, provides a perfect backdrop for the medieval market. The combination of real medieval architecture and the staged market landscape creates an atmosphere that attracts thousands of visitors to Wildeshausen every year.
While the main Wildeshausen Christmas Market traditionally takes place in the market square, the medieval market occupies the forecourt of the Alexanderkirche. Both markets are within walking distance of each other and are usually explored in a single visit.
The 12th edition of the Medieval Christmas Market in front of the Alexanderkirche Wildeshausen runs from December 11th to 13th, 2026. The Nordisches Marktvolk creates three days of medieval market atmosphere with crafts, shows, mead, beer, and music.
Free admission. The traditional Christmas market takes place concurrently in the market square of Wildeshausen (December 11th–20th, 2026).
The event runs for three days, starting on Friday afternoon and concluding late Sunday. Throughout the weekend, the program unfolds with ongoing shows, market activities, and food service. The forecourt of the Alexanderkirche is decorated with historical tents, illuminated fire pits, and rows of stalls.
Unlike purely Christmas markets, the medieval market eschews standard mulled wine in favor of hot mead and beer. The costumes of the participants, the absence of electric light in many areas (replaced by torches and candles), and the musical accompaniment with hurdy-gurdies and shawms create the immersive atmosphere that characterizes the Marktvolk.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven benchmarks of previous years:
