Palatinate Carnival Parade on Shrove Saturday with subsequent street carnival on Waldstraße
The Birkenheider Fastnachtsumzug is a typical example of community-based Palatinate carnival culture. Unlike the large parades in Mainz or Mutterstadt, it takes place in a small municipality and retains the familiar character of a village carnival – without sacrificing festive spirit and Palatinate dialect humor.
The assembly of the parade begins at 12:00 PM along Bruchweg, Feuerbergstraße, and Hundertmorgenstraße. Participating floats, walking groups, music bands, and guards find their positions and prepare for the start.
Precisely at 2:11 PM – the eleven, designated as the foolish symbolic number, also determines the time here – the parade starts and moves through the center of Birkenheide. Carnival clubs from the Maxdorf administrative district and Vorderpfalz participate, along with floats from local clubs, the fire department, and private groups. Sweets ("Bonbons"), stickers, and "Strüssjer" (small bouquets) are thrown into the crowd, and children eagerly collect the thrown items.
After the end of the parade, the event moves to Waldstraße, where the street carnival continues until 6:00 PM. DJs, live music, and food stalls with Palatinate specialties, mulled wine, beer, and Berliners (doughnuts) ensure a lively atmosphere. The carnival-goers remain in their costumes, sway together, and celebrate the end of the carnival season.
The Birkenheide carnival tradition shows that carnival is not only lovingly maintained in major carnival strongholds like Mainz, Cologne, or Düsseldorf, but also in small Palatinate municipalities. The combination of a parade and subsequent street carnival is a typical format of the Vorderpfalz carnival scene and makes the day an all-day family experience.
The 2026 edition continues the Birkenheide carnival tradition. The day combines a parade and street carnival into a cohesive carnival experience that brings the entire community and its neighboring towns together. Families, clubs, and carnival societies from the Maxdorf administrative district jointly shape the festival and ensure a successful end to the carnival season through their commitment.
