Recreational Running Tradition in Marzahn
The 1. VfL FORTUNA Marzahn is one of Berlin's traditional sports clubs in the eastern part of the city, focusing on athletics, table tennis, and other sports. The club manages the Sportplatz Allee der Kosmonauten 131 in the Marzahn district and has been organizing regular competitions for decades. The Marzahner Läufercup has established itself as a high-class recreational running series on a club sports ground and is firmly anchored in the competition calendar of the Berlin Athletics Association.
Half-hour and Hour Run Format
Unlike classic recreational runs over fixed distances (5 km, 10 km, half marathon), the Marzahner Läufercup is based on timed runs: athletes complete as many track laps as possible in either 30 or 60 minutes. This format allows for direct comparison of individual performance against wind and weather — and is measured more precisely on the synthetic track than a road race. It is a classic track format from athletics tradition; all age groups from U18 to W80/M80 start in separate categories.
Seven Dates in 2026
The 2026 season includes seven dates, starting on March 18 (Race 1) and extending into September. Specifically confirmed are: Race 1 on 18.03., Race 3 on 29.04., Race 5 on 01.07., Race 6 on 26.08., Race 7 on 23.09. Races 2 and 4 will follow the usual pattern (typically April and June). The early races are preferably held in the midday block, while mid- and late-season races may take place in the evening. Registration is via the athletics association platforms LADV and Leichtathletik.de.
Marzahn-Hellersdorf — The District Behind the Series
The Marzahn-Hellersdorf district on the eastern outskirts of Berlin is one of the most populous districts with around 280,000 inhabitants and is also home to an active sports and athletics tradition from GDR times. Clubs like FORTUNA Marzahn maintain this tradition with competition series, youth development, and volunteer club work. The Marzahner Läufercup is part of this club landscape.
