The Catholic feast of the Nativity of Mary is celebrated on September 8. In the Oldenburger Münsterland — one of the few predominantly Catholic regions in Lower Saxony — this feast holds special cultural significance. Cloppenburg, with its Catholic tradition, has developed the large Mariä-Geburtsmarkt from this religious holiday, enlivening the city center far beyond the actual feast day.

Four days of fair for the entire region

The 2026 market lasts four days — from Friday, September 11, to Monday, September 14. This makes it one of the longest continuous fairs in western Lower Saxony. Over 100 showman businesses set up their stalls in Cloppenburg's city center: carousels, roller coasters, swing boats, Ferris wheel, bumper cars, along with numerous food stalls offering bratwurst, potato pancakes, crêpes, gingerbread hearts, and cotton candy.

More than an amusement park — an occasion for gathering

The Mariä-Geburtsmarkt is more than just an amusement park: it is an occasion for the entire region to come together. Families, young people, seniors — all generations meet here, many from the neighboring communities of the Cloppenburg district. A flea market on Sunday or Monday (exact date to be announced by the organizer) also complements the program.

September in Cloppenburg is market and festival time: City festival on the last weekend, Mariä-Geburtsmarkt two weeks before. This concentration makes the city one of the liveliest medium-sized towns in Lower Saxony in late summer/early autumn. The Mariä-Geburtsmarkt is the more traditional, older date — rooted in Catholic piety history and experienced anew by every generation.
