Picnic session of the Mainzer Carneval-Verein in the Kongresssaal of the Rheingoldhalle with own food and drinks
The Funzelsitzung is an older session format from the Mainz Carnival tradition, revived in recent years. Its name refers to the old-fashioned 'Funzeln' (dim lamps) that once provided lighting in the clubhouses. Instead of a classic, high-priced gala evening, the Funzelsitzung focuses on a low-threshold atmosphere: Visitors come with their own picnic, spread out their checkered tablecloths, bring wine bottles and bread – and celebrate in this very direct, convivial way.
The Mainzer Carneval-Verein – MCV for short – was founded in 1838 and is one of the oldest and most influential Carnival clubs in Germany. It bears the main responsibility for the TV session 'Mainz bleibt Mainz, wie es singt und lacht', organizes several session formats throughout the carnival season, and is a central organizer of the 'Rosenmontagszug' (Rose Monday parade).
In terms of content, the Funzelsitzung follows the proven dramaturgy of a Mainz session: Büttenreden with political-satirical wit, dance performances by the MCV guards, show acts with comedy and acrobatics, musical contributions. The special feature lies in the setting – the relaxed picnic character creates an atmosphere that is noticeably warmer and more informal than at classic gala sessions.
The Rheingoldhalle at Rheinstraße 66 is Mainz's largest congress and event center directly on the Rhine riverbank. The Kongresssaal offers enough space for a large session with several hundred guests. Its central location near the city center makes travel particularly easy.
The exact session program is not fully published in advance – part of the excitement of a Mainz session lies in the surprise element of the 'Büttenreden' and show acts.
The structure follows the proven cornerstones of MCV sessions:
