Summer program in the KUZ garden with themed evenings dedicated to Mainz's partner cities and a gastronomic open-air concept
For decades, the Kulturzentrum Mainz (KUZ) on Dagobertstraße has been one of the most important venues for Mainz's subculture and independent scene. Concerts, theater performances, readings, workshops, and a diverse socio-cultural program have made the KUZ a fixture in Mainz's cultural landscape.
The Mainzer KulturGärten are the KUZ's summer program — a format developed in recent years that transforms the KUZ's backyard garden into an open-air meeting place. The KUZ garden is a green courtyard with tall trees, a garden bar, tables and benches, and a small stage — an urban oasis in the heart of Mainz.
The Summer 2026 runs from June to August and combines a permanent garden offering (bar, bistro, free table and meeting space) with curated themed evenings under the title Partners in Culture. These themed evenings are dedicated to Mainz's partner cities:
Spanish Evening on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, with a live salsa band, Spanish and Latin American cuisine (tapas, paella, tortilla, empanadas), sangria, and Spanish wines. Mainz is twinned with Valencia, which shapes the evening's program.
French Evening with chanson, French cuisine, and a program dedicated to Mainz's partner city Dijon (Burgundy).
American Evening with a soul-funk band, BBQ, and a program dedicated to Mainz's partner city Louisville (Kentucky).
Between the themed evenings, there is a mixed weekly program of DJ sets (often Friday and Saturday evenings), small concerts, readings, occasional open-air cinema nights, and simply free use of the garden with its bar and bistro.
The atmosphere is relaxed and urban — young people from Mainz meet after work, students and creatives from the surrounding neighborhoods use the garden as a meeting point, and families with children are welcome during the day and early evening. The opening hours are Monday to Friday 4 PM to 10 PM, Saturday 2 PM to 10 PM, Sunday 2 PM to 9 PM.
Admission is free — with a possible entrance fee for live band programs during themed evenings. Table reservations can be made online free of charge and are recommended for groups.
The complete 2026 program will be published by the Kulturzentrum Mainz. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: Garden opening at the beginning of June with extended opening hours; continuous bar, bistro, and meeting point operations; one to two themed evenings per month dedicated to Mainz's partner cities (Spanish Evening, French Evening, American Evening); regular DJ sets on Friday and Saturday evenings; occasional concerts and readings; in case of bad weather, relocation to the indoor area of the KUZ.
