One of Germany's most beautiful historic Christmas markets at the foot of Mainz Cathedral St. Martin from late November to Christmas Eve
The Mainzer Weihnachtsmarkt is an institution. First documented in 1788, it is one of the oldest and most atmospheric Christmas markets in Germany. The unique setting — the over thousand-year-old Dom St. Martin as a Romanesque cathedral and three closely connected squares (Domplatz, Höfchen, Liebfrauenplatz) — makes the market a must-visit for Advent travelers from all over Germany and Europe.
The organizer is mainzplus Citymarketing, the city's event management company. From November 26 to December 23, 2026, around 110 wooden stalls will line the three squares. The concept focuses on historic atmosphere and artisanal quality: no plastic kitsch, but wooden houses in traditional construction, selected exhibitors with genuine handicrafts, Advent decorations, woodwork, nativity figures, Erzgebirge art, and regional specialties.
Culinary, the Mainz market is characterized by its regional accents: Rhenish-Hessian mulled wine varieties, Federweißer (early in the season), Mainz specialties like Spundekäs and Handkäs mit Musik, potato pancakes with apple sauce, candied almonds, crêpes, and of course the classic sausages, doughnuts, and cookies. Several stalls offer Mainz wine processed into mulled wine — a variant particularly cherished in Mainz.
A Christmas pyramid with moving figures, a magnificently decorated Christmas tree, a nativity scene in front of the cathedral, and atmospheric lighting give the market its unmistakable character. The shop windows of the adjacent Mainz city center shops are integrated into the lighting concept.
The opening hours are extended: Sunday to Thursday from 11 am to 8:30 pm, Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 9 pm, closing at 7 pm on Christmas Eve. On weekends in December, the crowds are considerable — weekdays and early hours are more pleasant.
Accompanying the main market, the Mainz Christmas City takes place with further markets at Schillerplatz, Hopfengarten, Bahnhofsvorplatz, and Schloss-Innenhof — see Mainzer WinterZeit. With this market landscape, Mainz has firmly established itself among the most important German Christmas market cities — alongside Nuremberg, Dresden, Cologne, and Aachen.
The 2026 program follows the proven tradition of the Mainz Christmas market. The approximately 110 wooden stalls open daily between 11 am and 8:30 pm (Sunday to Thursday) or 11 am and 9 pm (Friday and Saturday). Special events will take place over the four Advent weekends: market opening with a mayoral address and pyramid lighting on November 26, Advent singing in front of the cathedral on Advent Sundays, St. Nicholas' visit on December 6, Christmas concerts in the cathedral on selected evenings, Christmas Eve closing at 7 pm. Further markets of the Mainz Christmas City run in parallel at Schillerplatz, Hopfengarten, Bahnhofsvorplatz, and Schloss-Innenhof.
