May Festival in Maikammer from May 14th to 17th, 2026 — traditional Palatinate Volksfest on the German Wine Route in the historic town center
Maikammer is one of the special wine villages of the Palatinate. The community at the foot of the Kalmit is part of the international Cittaslow network, a movement of livable small towns with high standards for quality of life, sustainability, and regional identity. This philosophy shapes the May Festival: it is not the biggest, not the loudest, but one of the most atmospheric wine festivals in the region.
The May Festival in Maikammer is one of the traditional Palatinate May festivals that take place around Ascension Day — this traditional German Father's Day and hiking day. The opening on Thursday, Ascension Day, marks the transition from the Palatinate spring to early summer and is the actual start of the season for many regular visitors.
The venue is the historic center of Maikammer — one of the best-preserved Palatinate village centers with half-timbered facades, baroque townhouses, small squares, and narrow alleys. During the May Festival, this backdrop becomes a wine mile: Maikammer wineries serve their wines in their courtyards, clubs offer refreshments at stands in the squares, and stages are located in several places.
The Maikammer vintners serve their wines from the Mittelhaardt-Südspitze vineyards — Rieslings with fruity freshness, powerful Pinot Blancs, fruity rosé wines, Pinot Noir, sparkling wine. Palatinate specialties at the club stands — Saumagen (pig's stomach stuffed with meat and spices), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Flammkuchen (thin crust pizza-like dish), Palatinate sausage salad — complete the offering. Cover bands, Palatinate dialect artists, and dance bands alternate on the stages.
The May Festival is family-friendly. The daytime events bring together families, hikers (Ascension Day is a traditional hiking day), tourists, and locals. In the evenings, the program becomes more festive — with dancing, music, and longer opening hours.
The 2026 edition starts on Thursday, May 14th, with the traditional opening on Ascension Day. The Maikammer wineries and clubs jointly present a four-day festival program in the historic town center.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure will follow the proven framework of previous years.
