35th Edition – One of the Five Largest Literary Festivals in German-Speaking Countries
The Göttingen Literature Autumn was founded in 1992 and has since developed into one of Germany's most renowned literary festivals. With its 35th edition in 2026, the festival continues its upward trajectory. The mix of established bestselling authors, poets, non-fiction writers, and experimental literary performances makes the Literature Autumn a special event on the German-language literary calendar.
One of the confirmed highlights is the reading by Caroline Wahl on October 6th, 2026, at 7 PM in the Stadthalle Northeim. Wahl, whose novels '22 Bahnen' and 'Windstärke 17' rank her among the most widely read German female authors of recent years, is one of the literary voices that most accurately capture the current zeitgeist of younger generations. The reading at the Stadthalle Northeim expands the festival's geographical venue network beyond Göttingen.
On October 9th, 2026, at 6 PM, a Miles Davis tribute will take place in Göttingen's Sheddachhalle. Actor Christian Brückner – one of the most distinguished readers in German-speaking countries, known among other things as the German voice of Robert De Niro – will combine readings from texts about and by Miles Davis with musical accompaniment by the Martin Auer Quintett. This creates a literary-musical evening that productively transcends genre boundaries.
The Literature Autumn's program is deliberately broad. Bestselling fiction, sophisticated non-fiction, poetry, children's and young adult books, crime fiction, travel literature, and experimental formats all have their place in the program. This diversity ensures the festival attracts a wide audience and creates points of connection for different types of readers.
Advance ticket sales for the 35th edition begin on August 13th, 2026. Experience shows that events with well-known headliners like Caroline Wahl sell out quickly, so early ticket purchase is recommended.
The festival combines numerous events with diverse genre profiles over more than ten days. Bestselling fiction, non-fiction discussions, poetry evenings, children's and young adult book readings, and experimental literary-musical performances are presented side-by-side. This allows the festival to reach a broad audience and secure its place among the most important literary festivals in German-speaking regions.
The spatial expansion with events at the Stadthalle Northeim is part of the festival's strategy to broaden its catchment area and bring events closer to the audience in the region. This transforms Göttingen into the literary capital of Southern Lower Saxony for a festival week.
