Traditional Maypole raising with subsequent May festival in Pforzheim-Eutingen
The Maypole raising on the eve of May 1st is one of Southern Germany's oldest traditional events. In Pforzheim, the tradition is maintained in several districts – Eutingen is one of them, alongside Würm, Büchenbronn, Huchenfeld, Hohenwart, and Brötzingen. The organizer is the Eutingen Fire Department, which carries out the Maypole raising organizationally and physically: The firefighters raise the decorated tree trunk using poles and ropes.
The meeting point is the corner of Inselstraße / Georg-Feuerstein-Straße in Eutingen. At 6 p.m., District Administrator Andreas Renner will welcome attendees with a short speech. This will be followed by the actual Maypole raising – the firefighters will hoist the tree trunk vertically in several stages, secured with poles and ropes. As soon as it is standing, the May festival with catering begins: sausages, beer, pretzels, lemonade.
The festival will be musically accompanied by two groups from the Pforzheim professional fire brigade: the fife and drum corps (whistles and drums) and the "Brandheiß" Big Band, which sets the atmosphere with swing and jazz pieces. The interplay between traditional fife and drum music and modern big band sound makes the Eutingen Maypole raising special.
Eutingen is a district of Pforzheim with around 8,200 inhabitants, located north of the city in the Enz valley. Eutingen is known for its closed historic town center and the Eutingen train station, which is on the Pforzheim–Bad Wildbad railway line. The Maypole raising is one of the central district events and an important identity-building occasion throughout the year.
The Maypole raising is just one element of the Southern German May tradition: Maypole, May festival, May King, May Queen, Walpurgis Night – the transition from April to May is actively celebrated in Pforzheim, as in the entire Alemannic-Swabian region. Eutingen thus joins a chain of customs that is also celebrated in parallel in the neighboring towns of Würm and Büchenbronn.
The eve of May 1, 2026, will be celebrated in Eutingen, as in the neighboring districts of Pforzheim, with the Maypole raising. The Eutingen fire department carries out the actual raising – a traditional craft that requires skill, teamwork, and a bit of courage. The spectacle is accompanied by the fife and drum corps and the big band of the professional fire brigade.
