Festung Mark — Magdeburg's Cultural Capsule

The Festung Mark is a former Prussian fortress complex in the north of Magdeburg's city center, whose brick vaults and casemates are today among the most beautiful event venues in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Concerts, theater, festivals — anyone wanting atmosphere in Magdeburg can't miss Festung Mark. And once a year, in mid-March, the complex transforms into a meeting point for all Irish Folk fans in Central Germany: for the Magdeburg Irish Folk Festival.

Ten Bands, Two Stages, Two Days

At the 18th edition in 2026, ten international and German bands will once again play on two stages on Friday and Saturday evenings. The 2026 program features: Bäry & Friends, Nobody Knows, The Keltics, and Adam & Freddie on Friday — bands playing high-quality German Irish Folk. On Saturday, The Peaky Pluckers, The Aberlours, Bad Penny, F.Misd, Clonemac Noise, and Drunken Dolly will perform — a mix of traditional folk music and modern, almost Celtic-punk-like sounds.

Whiskey, Darts, and Fortress Atmosphere

What sets the festival apart is the atmosphere in the vaults: compact brick architecture, subdued lighting, acoustically excellent — and an audience that sings along, sways, and dances. Between bands, there are whiskey tastings with various single malts and blends, plus a dart lounge for that pub atmosphere, grilled food, and baked potatoes. 18 Years of Festival Tradition

The festival has been running since 2009 — a remarkable constant in a festival landscape that often pays for its size with a short lifespan. The organizers, "IrishFolk on Tour", have carefully curated and gently developed the format over almost two decades. Magdeburg is centrally located in Central Germany and is reachable from Berlin, Hanover, and Leipzig in two to three hours — perfect for a folk music short trip.
