Mackenrode — Village district of the municipality of Gleichen

Mackenrode is one of the districts of the municipality of Gleichen in the southeastern Göttingen district. The municipality of Gleichen comprises several historic villages in the hilly landscape south of Göttingen, and Mackenrode maintains its own club life, its own festival tradition, and its own village identity. The Mackenrode Shooting Club (Schützenverein Mackenrode e.V.) is one of the central clubs in the village.

Three Days of Festivities at the Schützenhaus

The Mackenroder Schützenfest 2026 spans three days. The Schützenhaus Mackenrode, with its adjacent shooting range and club grounds, forms the central backdrop. The king's shooting, the marquee, catering, and the stage program take place here. The manageable scale gives the festival its special charm: it is not an anonymous large folk festival, but a family-friendly village event where people know each other and celebrate together.

King's Shooting as the Centerpiece

The king's shooting — where the title of shooting king is contested — forms the traditional highlight of the festival. This tradition dates back to the original function of shooting clubs as civic militias and has been preserved to this day as an important act of club identity. The new shooting king or queen is solemnly proclaimed and particularly honored during the festival days.

Opening Evening, Gala Saturday, and Morning Pint

Friday is traditionally marked by a festive opening evening. On Saturday, the king's shooting and the grand gala evening with live music and dancing take place. Sunday is dedicated to the morning pint (Frühschoppen), the proclamation of the new royal family, and family day. This classic program structure corresponds to the typical setup of North German shooting festivals.

Connection with Friendly Clubs

Friendly shooting clubs from the surrounding area — from other districts of the municipality of Gleichen and from neighboring municipalities — are invited to the shooting festival and participate in the parade. This regional networking is an important part of the shooting tradition and ensures lively encounters between the clubs.
