Low German Christmas Market in the most romantic fishing village of East Frisia
Greetsiel is a hotspot of North Sea tourism in the summer – but in December, the village returns to what it has always been at its core: a quiet, intimate place where thatched-roof houses stand close together, the harbor rests, and the lights of the ships are reflected in the dark water. It is precisely in this atmosphere that the Lüttje Greetmer Wiehnachtsmarkt takes place – a deliberately small, personal market that welcomes its visitors with authenticity and Low German charm.
The Wiehnachtsmarkt clearly sets itself apart from large commercial Christmas markets. You won't find mass-produced goods and imported gifts here. Instead, handmade products from the region characterize the sales stands:
What visitors to this market particularly appreciate is the light installation: fairy lights stretch from house to house across the Sielstraße, every thatched gable is lovingly decorated, the crab cutters at the harbor glow, and the twin mills, together with the harbor basin, create a postcard-perfect scene that makes even hardened Greetsiel regulars reach for their smartphones every year. A small Christmas tree in the central square completes the mood.
The name "Lüttje Greetmer Wiehnachtsmarkt" says it all: Low German is still a living everyday language in the Krummhörn region, and the market celebrates this tradition. Some stalls advertise in Low German, some singers and small choirs perform Low German Advent songs, and occasionally there are readings from Low German Christmas literature. For visitors from more southern regions of Germany, the festival thus offers not only Advent atmosphere but also a small cultural insight into a language and way of life that is often underrepresented in Germany's general perception.
The Lüttje Greetmer Wiehnachtsmarkt 2026 remains true to its proven concept: two weekends, approx. 20 to 25 stalls, exclusively regional and handmade products. Generous light installation along the Sielstraße and at the harbor.
The detailed program for 2026 (stalls, music, readings) will be published in November 2026. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Sielstraße and Harbor, Greetsiel (26736 Krummhörn). The market extends along the historic town center.
Both Advent weekends, Saturday and Sunday, approximately 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Exact times will be published on the website of the Tourismus GmbH shortly before the market.
Free entry to the market. Food, drinks, and gifts are purchased directly at the stalls.
Car via L2/L3 from Emden (13 km). Paid parking at the Greetsiel parking lots on the outskirts of town. Bus connection line 411 from Emden station – timetable reduced in December, so check in advance.
