The Sound of Düsseldorf — Jazz, Soul, Indie and World Music in a Dozen Venues in the NRW State Capital
The Lovebird Festival (English for "lovebird") is the latest success story of the Düsseldorf music scene. Since 2024, it has occupied around a dozen venues in the NRW state capital for four days — from the venerable Johanneskirche and the Palais Wittgenstein to the industrial-chic Rudas Studios in Oberkassel. The curatorial line: Jazz is the starting point, not the endpoint. Hip-hop, soul, funk, neoclassical, poetry, and world music converge at a festival that consciously transcends musical boundaries.
The third edition will take place from Thursday, June 4th to Sunday, June 7th, 2026. The opening concert will be performed by the Brazilian-German singer Mari Froes on Thursday evening at 8:30 PM in the Rudas Studios. Spread across the following days: the Marcus Schinkel Trio feat. US saxophone legend Ernie Watts, Johanna Summer & Malakoff Kowalski (piano duo blending neoclassical and songwriter pop), Nigerian-German soul singer Nneka, drummer Diego Piñera with Odd Wisdom, the Lebanese-influenced Kazdoura project, and Sparda Jazz Award winners Alexander Rueß (guitar) and David Giesel (drums).
The festival leverages the cultural density of the state capital: Theatermuseum Hofgartenhaus, Palais Wittgenstein, Johanneskirche, Maxhaus, Goethe-Museum, Rathauskeller, Stadtstrand am Robert-Lehr-Ufer, Kunst- und Kulturstrand am Tonhallenufer, Malkasten, and Rudas Studios. Ticket prices and stage times vary by venue — the Infield festival app allows you to create a personalized festival schedule.
In addition to concerts, there is "Das musikalische Poesiealbum" (The Musical Poetry Album) with poetry performances, workshops for music enthusiasts, and panel discussions with industry experts. A special highlight on Sunday: a guided birdwatching walk through the Hofgarten — a tribute to the festival's name.
The independent city of Düsseldorf is the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia and, with the Lovebird Festival, gains another profile: Jazz and Crossover, curated with a clear signature and consistent quality. The festival complements Düsseldorf's established festival landscape (Tanzhaus NRW, Tonhalle, Jazz Rally) and puts the city on the map internationally as a jazz location.
