Medieval market and fantasy spectacle with the fire-breathing dragon Fangdorn on the Loreley plateau
For over two hundred years, the Loreley has been one of Germany's most famous natural landmarks — Heinrich Heine's ballad about the singing maiden who lures sailors to their deaths has cemented the rock in literary memory worldwide. The fact that medieval and fantasy markets are now regularly held on this myth-laden plateau seems almost like a logical echo: nowhere else in Germany do legendary creatures, camp life, and mystical performances fit the natural backdrop so well.
The Medieval and Fantasy Days are organized by bibow communications gmbh from Berlin under their “Sündenfrei” label, an agency specializing in historical markets with events across Germany. On the Loreley plateau, they erect a market village of tents and stalls, consistently adhering to medieval and fantastic aesthetics: leather goods, blacksmith art, drinking horns, medieval clothing, wooden toys, mead, and hot mead, medieval food on a spit. In addition, minstrels, fire artists, jugglers, and show fighters perform.
The unique selling point: Fangdorn, a twelve-meter-long mechanical dragon, is pulled through the market grounds and regularly breathes fire and roars. The dragon is a well-known showpiece in the German fantasy and Larp scene and regularly draws large crowds. The spectacle is complemented by elf performers in elaborate costumes who walk among the visitors, as well as other fantasy creatures.
The event is deliberately designed to be family-friendly — children can try archery, become knights, marvel at dragons up close, and participate in craft activities. Cosplayers are explicitly welcome; many visitors come in costume. Spread over two days, this creates a dense program that appeals to both day-trippers from the Rhine-Main region and overnight tourists — the Loreley is located in the middle of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage site, within ideal reach for a long weekend.
The 2026 edition takes advantage of the long weekend around October 3rd. With German Unity Day falling on a Saturday, both event days create an ideal bridge. The Loreley becomes a stage for historical and fantastic performances — the twelve-meter-long dragon Fangdorn provides regular spectacular moments, elves wander through the camp, show fighters compete against each other, and minstrels provide musical accompaniment.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: medieval market with crafts and culinary delights, regular dragon shows with Fangdorn, performances by minstrels and jugglers, show fights, children's program.
