The Trier Underworlds are a special feature of Germany's oldest city. Over 2,000 years of city history have left a hidden network of Roman substructures, medieval cellars, early modern vaults, and industrial-era facilities beneath today's Trier city center. In recent years, the Trier Underworlds Association has made this invisible heritage visible through research, education, and event formats.
The Long Night of the Underworlds is the most spectacular highlight of the Trier Underworlds Festival each year. On a single evening, several normally inaccessible cellars, catacombs, and vaults in Trier's city center are opened. Visitors can decide which stations to visit and — usually with a map — move from entrance to entrance.
A diverse program awaits at the stations: Guided explanations of the history and construction of each space, theater performances, readings, concerts (often with special acoustics), light installations, and culinary stops with local specialties and drinks. The cool and damp atmosphere of the underworlds lends the night a distinctive character.
