Four evenings of literature in Wittmund celebrating talent, humour, world literature, and dramatic readings
The LiteraturFest Wittmund sees itself as a compact literary short festival with a clear dramaturgical structure. Instead of a long programme with any number of readings, it focuses on four evenings, each catering to its own theme, atmosphere, and audience. The order has been stable since its first edition in 2022: Talent, Humour, World Literature, Dramatic Reading.
The Talent evening offers a stage for young and regional authors – often in cooperation with writing groups and schools. The Humour evening thrives on witty readings, often combined with cabaret elements. The World Literature evening brings contemporary translations of great international voices to Wittmund. The festival concludes with a dramatic reading, where actors stage a longer text.
The collaboration between the Ostfriesischer Kunstkreis and the Wittmund City Library gives the festival its special profile. While the OKK contributes its contacts in the art and culture scene, the city library provides literary expertise, a networked audience, and institutional anchoring. The result is a festival that is seriously curated on the one hand, while also appealing to broader reader groups without any reservations on the other.
The festival has grown annually since 2022. The halls at Esenser Straße 14 are regularly well-attended; audiences travel from all over the Wittmund district and sometimes from neighbouring East Frisian regions. 2026 marks the fifth edition – a first small anniversary, confirming the festival's establishment in the East Frisian cultural calendar.
In its fifth edition, the format remains stable – four evenings, four tones, one shared venue. The programme design follows the proven logic of previous years, supplemented by new voices and current international texts.
The event halls at Esenser Straße 14 are small enough to create an intimate atmosphere, yet large enough to allow for a serious stage presence. Readings are complemented by musical accents and visual elements.
The exact 2026 programme with authors and translations will be published by the organiser in the summer.
