Upper Franconian Autumn Kirchweih in the Frankenwald
The Leupoldsgrün Kirchweih is part of the Upper Franconian autumn festival culture. Unlike the summer Kirchweih festivals held in many Franconian towns in July and August, the Kerwa in Leupoldsgrün is celebrated in October – traditionally one week after the Erntedankfest, which falls on the first Sunday in October.
The municipality of Leupoldsgrün is located in the Hof district (AGS 09475) in the extreme northeast of Bavaria, at the transition from the Vogtland to the Frankenwald. The area is characterized by rolling low mountain landscape, small villages, and a close-knit club scene. The Kirchweih is one of the central club festivals of the year, alongside the Leupoldsgrün Whitsun Festival.
An Upper Franconian autumn Kirchweih traditionally follows a clear structure: a festive church service on Sunday morning, a "Frühschoppen" (morning pint) with music, lunch served by the clubs, and dancing in the afternoon and evening. The Kerwa is often organized jointly by the volunteer fire department, the marksmen's clubs, and other local associations. Families from the surrounding area use the day to meet up and enjoy refreshments together.
The connection between the Erntedankfest and the Kirchweih is a familiar tradition in Upper Franconia, which is both Protestant and Catholic: the Erntedankfest represents gratitude for the harvested crops, and the subsequent Kirchweih extends this mood into a communal village festival. In Leupoldsgrün, this sequence has been maintained for a long time – an indication of the Kerwa's firm establishment in local customs.
The Leupoldsgrün Kirchweih 2026 is scheduled for Sunday, October 11, 2026, following the municipality's established pattern. The event typically begins with a festive church service in the morning, followed by a "Frühschoppen" (morning pint), lunch served by the clubs, and dancing throughout the day. The local clubs – the fire department, marksmen, and music association – organize the festival together.
The detailed program will be published shortly before the date in the municipal newsletter and on the Leupoldsgrün municipality website. For the Frankenwald region, the Kerwa is an important autumn meeting point.
Detailed times, musical groups, and vendor information will be published by the Leupoldsgrün municipality before the festival date.
