Advent market at Veldenz Square with castle tours, St. Nicholas, and Christmas music
The Veldenz Square in Lauterecken is named after the historic Veldenz Castle, which shaped the town for centuries. In the Middle Ages, Lauterecken was the residence of the County of Veldenz and later the Palatinate line of Veldenz-Lützelstein. Parts of the castle still stand today and house remarkable historic rooms. This historically rich environment lends the Lautereck Christmas Market a special atmosphere that sets it apart from many other Advent markets in the region.
The Christmas market extends across Veldenz Square in front of the castle and reaches into the neighboring Fassenkeller, a historic vaulted cellar of the town. The market stalls offer arts and crafts, gift ideas, Christmas decorations, Advent arrangements, leather goods, jewelry, and culinary specialties. Mulled wine, children's punch, bratwurst, potato pancakes, crêpes, waffles, and sweet baked goods cater to the visitors' culinary well-being.
Among the special program highlights of the Lautereck Christmas Market are the castle tours, offered at 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Visitors can explore the historic rooms of Veldenz Castle, learn more about the eventful history of the town, and immerse themselves in another era. Another highlight for families: the visit of St. Nicholas around 5:00 PM, who visits the children, distributes small gifts, and brings joy to their eyes.
On a small stage or in the castle courtyard, Christmas music performances are presented throughout the afternoon and evening. Trombone choirs, church choirs, brass quartets, and possibly other musical groups from the Lauterecken-Wolfstein administrative district shape the program.
With December 5th, the 2026 Lautereck Christmas Market falls just before the 2nd Sunday of Advent, marking the beginning of the main Advent season. The combination of the historic castle setting, a compact market concept, and a well-thought-out accompanying program makes the market an insider tip away from the major Christmas market routes. Visitors are expected from the entire Glan Valley, from the Kusel district, and from neighboring municipalities in the Donnersbergkreis.
