Autumn festival with lantern parade on the car-free island
When the season winds down on the car-free Baltic Sea island and the days get shorter, the Laternenfest is one of the most beautiful dates in the island's autumn. A festival tent, stage, and activity areas are set up in the Kloster marina; the program ranges from midday to early evening, with the lantern parade forming the finale.
The Laternenfest is primarily aimed at families. From midday onwards, guests can participate in the pumpkin carving contest; materials and pumpkins are provided. Following a film screening in the festival tent, there will be joint lantern crafting accompanied by live music from artist Laura Blue. A contest for the most beautiful lantern concludes the crafting session before the parade through Kloster begins.
The highlight is the joint parade in the early evening: from the festival tent, the procession moves with handcrafted lanterns through the streets of Kloster, accompanied by songs. On a car-free island, this parade has a special tranquility—no engines, only voices, bells, and the light of the lanterns in front of the thatched-roof houses.
Before and after the parade, a barbecue, hot and cold drinks, and a campfire with stick bread cater to the guests. Play and craft stations are open throughout the afternoon. Free admission for all activities.
Kloster is the main northern town on the island of Hiddensee in the Vorpommern-Rügen district. Travel by ferry from Schaprode, Stralsund, or Zingst—the Hiddensee ferry operates year-round, with a reduced schedule in the off-season.
The 2026 Laternenfest will take place on Monday, October 19th, 2026, from 12 PM to 7 PM in the festival tent at the Kloster marina. Organizers are the municipality of Seebad Insel Hiddensee and the Hiddenseer Hafen- und Kurbetrieb. Starting at 12 PM, the pumpkin carving contest with free pumpkins will kick things off. At 1 PM, the animated film »Coco – The Greatest Day Ever« will be shown in the festival tent. From 3 PM, children and parents will craft lanterns together with free materials, accompanied by live music from artist Laura Blue. At 6:15 PM, the most beautiful lantern will be chosen, and from 6:30 PM, the grand lantern parade with songs will proceed through the streets of Kloster. Barbecue, hot drinks, and a campfire with stick bread will complement the day.
