A journey back to the Rococo era with Landgrave Ludwig IX and his Grenadiers
Pirmasens owes its town charter and significant development to Landgrave Ludwig IX of Hesse-Darmstadt, who shaped the city in the 18th century and gave it its characteristic military history. The Landgrafentage commemorate this era, making the Rococo and Baroque periods tangible for today's audience.
On Saturday at noon, Landgrave Ludwig IX, portrayed in historical costume, along with his consort Caroline and the Grenadiers, will open the historical market. This reenactment combines a festive opening with historical performance, forming one of the weekend's highlights.
At the stalls, merchants and artisans will present their products in a historical setting: blacksmiths will work at open fires, leatherworkers will demonstrate their techniques, and potters will shape clay on the wheel. Knights and soldier reenactors will also be present, bringing the world of 18th-century courtly and military culture to life. Food and drinks will be served according to historically inspired recipes.
Schlossplatz, in the heart of Pirmasens' city center, provides the ideal setting for the event. Its central location and size offer space for various activity zones – market stalls, a stage, a camp, and an area for demonstrations. The city's historical substance enhances the reenactment without the need for elaborate set construction.
The 2026 edition continues the successful format of the Landgrafentage. The historical market draws on Pirmasens' city history and makes the 18th century tangible through the actions of the reenactors.
The exact program for 2026, including participating groups, demonstrations, and activity points, will be announced in advance by the City of Pirmasens.
