The Choir Land of Saxony-Anhalt Gathers

With the State Choir Days, the State Music Council of Saxony-Anhalt e.V. (LMR) creates a statewide forum for the choral landscape of the federal state. In 2026, the event will take place from June 19 to 21 in the Bauhaus city of Dessau-Roßlau, the capital of the historical region of Anhalt. The motto "Anstimmen in Anhalt" connects singing with the regional location: Anhalt – a term that is culturally more defining today than administratively (Dessau-Roßlau is an independent city).

Three Days, Three Formats

The State Choir Days are divided into three sequential formats: On Friday, June 19, the Junior Choir Festival opens with primary school choirs from across the federal state. On Saturday, June 20, the new State Choir Festival format will take place for the first time, featuring performances by numerous adult choirs. On Sunday, June 21, the actual State Choir Competition follows – the official qualification format for the 12th German Choir Competition (Leipzig, May 1-9, 2027). Those who win in Dessau will represent Saxony-Anhalt at the national level.

Dessau-Roßlau — Bauhaus City and Anhalt's Cultural Center

Dessau-Roßlau is not a random host: The city is a UNESCO World Heritage site (Bauhaus, Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm) and at the same time home to the Anhaltisches Theater – one of the most important theater houses in Central Germany. The venues for the State Choir Days are therefore spaces with history and acoustics: from the Anhaltisches Theater to St. Mary's Church and smaller halls in the city center. Its location between Wittenberg, Magdeburg, and Leipzig also makes the city centrally accessible.

Not an Elite Competition Format

What distinguishes the State Choir Days: They are deliberately broad-based. From primary school choirs to adult choirs to semi-professional concert choirs – everyone finds their stage here. Workshops, coaching sessions, and exchange concerts complement the program items. This showcases the actual choir life of Saxony-Anhalt, a federal state with a particularly active association and church choir scene.
