About Summer Parade Sondernheim

The Lätare Summer Parade Sondernheim is the smaller and decidedly local sister event to the large Germersheim Summer Parade. In the Sondernheim district, a suburb of Germersheim on the Rhine, children, families, and associations parade through the village on Lätare Sunday – the fourth Sunday of Lent – with self-made summer sticks. The parade is accompanied by music clubs and culminates in the traditional symbolic burning of the snowman as a sign of the end of winter. Free admission.

The Lätare Summer Parade Sondernheim is organised by the Sondernheim local council and local associations. Unlike the large Germersheim parade, it does not take place in the town centre of the core city but deliberately remains within the district. Lätare Sunday is one week before the Germersheim date and allows Sondernheim families their own manageable traditional event.

Significance

The summer parade tradition is deeply rooted throughout the Palatinate and Baden regions and symbolises the transition from winter to spring. The burning of the snowman (usually a straw figure) marks the end of winter; children parade with self-made summer sticks made of boxwood, decorated with pretzels, eggs, and chocolate.

Route

Assembly and start are at the Tulla-Halle in Sondernheim. From there, the parade proceeds through the main streets of the village, accompanied by music clubs from Sondernheim and Germersheim. The route is shorter and more manageable than that of the core city; the character is village-like and family-friendly.

Snowman Burning

At the end of the parade, the snowman is symbolically burned. The children sing the traditional summer songs, after which small sweets are distributed. A convivial gathering often follows in the Tulla-Halle or the surrounding community centre.
