Spectacular convoy of Greetsiel crab cutters through East Frisia's oldest fishing harbor
Greetsiel is a place that has inextricably linked its identity with crab fishing. The Traditional Kutter-Korso-Fahrt is the annual highlight where this identity is publicly celebrated. On a Saturday in August, the crab cutters of the Greetsiel fleet – each cutter bearing a sonorous Frisian name and belonging to one of the village's traditional fishing families – gather in the harbor, are festively decorated with flags, pennants, and colorful ribbons, and then set sail in an orderly formation.
Greetsiel is home to around 20 active crab cutters – making it the largest active crab cutter harbor in East Frisia. The cutters are not museum ships but are in use on weekdays: early in the morning, they set out to catch the famous North Sea crabs in the mudflats and coastal waters, which are then sold at the docks or directly on-site. On this special day, however, the ships serve another purpose: showcasing their maritime splendor.
As early as the morning, the quaysides fill with curious spectators. Families secure the best spots along Sielstraße, the harbor basin, and the Sieltief early on. Around noon, depending on wind and tide, preparations begin on board: the crews polish the hulls, hoist the flags, and – if available – sound the festive signal horns.
The day of the Kutter-Korso-Fahrt is one of the busiest dates in Greetsiel's event calendar. Cafés, fish roll stands, and restaurants in the historic town center experience peak activity. Those who want to enjoy the spectacle in complete tranquility should arrive early – parking spaces on the outskirts are often occupied from late morning onwards. The effort is rewarded with an experience that embodies the maritime character of East Frisia like hardly any other summer event.
