Opening of the sculpture hiking trail in Kronenburg — 32 installations along 9 km of Eifel paths
KUNSTamWEG Kronenburg is a permanent sculpture and land art hiking trail in the High Eifel village of Kronenburg, a district of the municipality of Dahlem in the Euskirchen district of North Rhine-Westphalia. The festive opening will take place on Sunday, May 10, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Haus für Lehrerfortbildung, Burgstraße 20 — followed by a concert with Celtic harp in the historic St. Johann Baptist church.
The sculpture trail is divided into four circular routes, which can be walked individually or as a total route of approximately 9 km. A total of 32 art installations are waiting to be discovered — a mix of historical structures over 500 years old and new works by contemporary artists. Sculptures, land art, sound objects, and participatory stations wind through meadows, castle grounds, and forest edges around the historic village center.
On the opening day, artist talks, musical performances, and guided tours will accompany visitors along the paths. The meeting point and starting location is the Haus für Lehrerfortbildung, Burgstraße 20, 53949 Kronenburg. The event concludes with a harp concert by Christine Högl (Celtic harp) in the late Gothic St. Johann Baptist church — a resonant echo of the sculpture landscape.
Kronenburg is situated on a rocky plateau above the Kyll valley, bordering Rhineland-Palatinate. The medieval mountain village with its castle ruins, market square, and Gothic church is one of the most beautiful villages in the Eifel region. Kronenburg has been an artists' village since the 1920s — the Eifel Painters, including Ernst Isselmann and Curt Lahs, discovered the unique light of the High Eifel. KUNSTamWEG builds on this tradition, combining nature experience with contemporary art.
The organizer is the Kulturverein Freies Forum Kronenburg e.V., located at Burgstraße 20. The association operates the Haus für Lehrerfortbildung as a conference and cultural center and has curated exhibitions, concerts, and symposia in Kronenburg for decades. With KUNSTamWEG, a permanently accessible open-air museum is being created in the Eifel.
The first edition of KUNSTamWEG opens a permanently accessible sculpture trail around Kronenburg. Four separate circular routes cover a total of approximately 9 km with 32 stations — from historical structures to contemporary installations. The opening day features artist talks, music, and a harp concert in the late Gothic church of St. Johann Baptist.
The exact map of the circular routes and descriptions of the individual works will be available on the opening day and at kunstamwegkronenburg.de.
Free admission. The sculpture trails are publicly accessible year-round thereafter.
By car: Take the A1 motorway, exit Blankenheim, then follow the B51 and L26 to Kronenburg. Parking is available below the mountain village. By public transport: Take the train to Jünkerath, then bus 832 to Kronenburg.
