Readings, lectures, and musical-literary evenings in the Burgenlandkreis
The Burgenlandkreis in southern Saxony-Anhalt (AGS 15084) rightly bears its name: Naumburg with its famous cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage), Freyburg with Neuenburg Castle, Weißenfels with Neu-Augustusburg Castle, Zeitz with Moritzburg Castle — a region full of historical substance. This is precisely the diversity that the KUMBRA Literature Festival utilizes: instead of choosing a central venue, it distributes its program across the entire district from August to December. Readings in libraries, lectures in museums, musical-literary evenings in castles and cafés. The term "Literaturherbst" (Literature Autumn) is programmatic — the events indeed extend deep into autumn.
The 2026 season starts on August 1st with a themed hike at Weingut Pawis. A week later, on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at Café zum Esel in Wetterzeube, Thomas Leibe will read from his book 'Kaffeemann und Naschmadame'. The venue is small, atmospheric — a typical living-room format of the Literaturherbst. Wetterzeube is a small municipality in the southern Burgenlandkreis, near the border with Thuringia and Saxony, and Café zum Esel is a charming local address.
Cultural institutions and organizers can register their contributions by May 15, 2026, to be included in the printed program calendar. Requirements: literary relevance and venue in the Burgenlandkreis. The festival is a platform that bundles regional players — and that's precisely what makes it appealing.
The reading at Café zum Esel is part of the Burgenlandkreis-wide Literaturherbst program 2026. The season opens with a themed hike at Weingut Pawis on August 1st. The exact time of the reading will be announced on kumbra.de.
