Grand Shooting Festival of the Soest District Shooting Association in Niederense
The District Shooting Festival of the Soest District Shooting Association is the largest joint festival event of the Soest shooting clubs. On the weekend of September 11 and 12, 2026, the St. Stephanus Brotherhood Niederense will host the festivities as the host club. Niederense, a district of the municipality of Ense in the southwestern Soest district, will thus become the center of shooting tradition between the Möhnesee and the Ruhr Valley for two days.
The Soest District Shooting Association unites around 130 shooting clubs and brotherhoods from the entire district. From the Hellweg to the Sauerland, these clubs maintain the traditional customs of king shooting, festive parades, and festival tents — a tradition deeply rooted in Westphalian identity. Each year, a different member club hosts the grand District Shooting Festival; in 2026, Niederense is the host.
The 2026 District Shooting Festival is embedded in a calendar of events that rhythms the Soest shooting season from spring to autumn:
With just under 3,000 inhabitants, Niederense is the largest district of the municipality of Ense in the Soest district. The village is located north of the Möhne Dam, at the transition between the Soester Börde and the Sauerland — a scenically attractive location. The local St. Stephanus Brotherhood has a centuries-old tradition and takes on the role of host for the weekend: the festival tent, shooting ranges, parade route, and festival catering are organized by the club together with the district board.
The exact daily program will be published a few weeks before the festival on kreisschuetzenbund-soest.de. As expected, it will include king shooting, a festive parade of all participating clubs through Niederense, a festival service, and a coronation ceremony followed by a festive evening in the tent.
The St. Stephanus Brotherhood Niederense is the host of the District Shooting Festival in 2026. For two days, representatives of the approximately 130 Soest shooting clubs gather for the largest joint festival event of the season.

Those who want to experience the District Shooting Festival up close should arrive early for the Sunday parade: here, all participating brotherhoods show off their uniforms, flags, and marching bands in full splendor. The previous year's king and queen traditionally hand over the royal dignity.
