Krautrock: A German Genre Celebrated Internationally

The term Krautrock was coined in the British music press in the early 1970s and refers to an artistic movement that found its own, internationally highly regarded language in Germany between psychedelia, free improvisation, electronics, and rock. Bands like Can, Faust, Neu!, or Amon Düül II – and also KRAAN, JANE, GURU GURU, and EPITAPH – wrote music history and influenced generations of later artists, including David Bowie, Radiohead, and Tame Impala. A Krautrock festival is therefore more than nostalgia: it is an appreciation of one of the few genuinely German contributions to international rock music.

Four Bands, One Stage, One Evening

The lineup of the 1st Krautrockfestival Ludwigshafen brings together four defining representatives:

• KRAAN – active since 1970, a virtuosic mix of jazz-rock, fusion, and Krautrock
• JANE – legendary band from Hannover, German hard rock with psychedelic influences, active since the early 1970s
• GURU GURU – free, improvisational Krautrock led by drummer Mani Neumeier, a living piece of rock history since 1968
• EPITAPH – British-German hard rock formation with a long live tradition

Kulturzentrum dasHaus: The Perfect Setting

The venue is the Kulturzentrum dasHaus at Bahnhofstraße 30 – for decades, one of the most daring stages in the Vorderpfalz for concerts spanning jazz, world music, singer-songwriters, experimental, and soul culture. The intimate concert atmosphere, the constant proximity between stage and audience, and the excellent acoustics make dasHaus the ideal location for a journey into the wild sounds of the 1970s.
