Wine-filled Winemaker Days around the Kostheim Wine Fountain on the Main
Kostheim is one of Mainz's special districts: legally belonging to Mainz, but administered by Wiesbaden since 1945, located on the right bank of the Main shortly before its confluence with the Rhine, with its own wine-growing tradition and historically close ties to the Rheingau. This geographical and cultural location also shapes the Kostheim Wine Festival, which is jointly organized by the small local wineries of the district and which counts as one of the main wine festivals of the year in the AKK area (Amöneburg, Kastel, Kostheim) every August.
The venue is the area around the Kostheimer Weinbrunnen — a central square in the historic Kostheim town center, symbolizing the district's wine-growing character. Here, the participating wineries set up their stalls, the wine tasting stand offers a tasting selection across the participating wineries, complemented by culinary stalls with bratwurst, tarte flambée, cheese platters, and sweets. The atmosphere is that of a classic German wine village: long rows of tables, benches, a mild riverside climate, guests from the district and the entire region.
The participants in 2026 include the established Kostheim wineries, such as Schilling, Sauer, Bott, Scherbaum, and Frosch. These family businesses manage their vineyards in the areas around Kostheim and represent a regionally anchored wine style with Rieslings, Burgundian varieties, cuvées, and often an emphasized proportion of rosé and light summer wines that suit the warm season and the riverside atmosphere. The vintners are present at the stalls themselves, serving wine, explaining the wines, and using the festival for direct customer engagement within the district.
The festival is designed to be family-friendly. Children can play by the Main river, families can find tables and benches, and the program is quieter than at large Mainz wine markets — no loud stage music, but relaxed conviviality, with conversations and wine tasting at the center. For the people of Kostheim, the wine festival is a district event; for wine lovers from Mainz and Wiesbaden, it is a worthwhile summer excursion to a lesser-known but traditional wine town that enriches the regional wine diversity with its own facet.
The 2026 edition follows the established structure of the Kostheim Wine Festival. Friday evening marks the start with an opening in the late afternoon, the first guests, and a relaxed mood. Saturday is the main visitor day with the wine tasting stand opening at 4 PM, full service until 10 PM, and a relaxed summer evening atmosphere at the Weinbrunnen. Sunday opens already in the morning at 11 AM and offers a long festival day with morning drinks, lunch, afternoon visitors, and winding down in the evening until 10 PM.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the participating wineries and Kostheim associations in early summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: wine tasting across the Kostheim wineries, culinary accompaniment, quiet background music, no loud stage shows.
