Traditional Palatinate Junikerwe in the red wine village of Königsbach on the Haardtrand
The Königsbacher Weinkerwe takes place from Friday, June 19th to Tuesday, June 23rd, 2026 — the traditional third weekend in June. It is the Palatinate Junikerwe of the small but renowned wine village of Königsbach, one of the eight wine villages of the town of Neustadt an der Weinstraße.
Königsbach differs from most other Palatinate wine villages due to its pronounced affinity for red wine: The geological conditions on the Haardtrand and the south-west facing slopes offer ideal conditions for Spätburgunder, Dornfelder, and other red grape varieties. While the Palatinate is generally considered a white wine region, Königsbach has earned a reputation as a red wine village — and the Königsbacher Weinkerwe showcases this specialty.
The festival concept is classically Palatinate: The Kerwe opens on Friday evening with the Kerwe parade through the village. Palatinate vintners will be serving their wines on the festival grounds and in the courtyards — from robust Spätburgunder and structured Dornfelder to refreshing white wines from the higher-lying slopes.
A special feature of the Königsbacher Kerwe is the stand of the "Die Kinschbacher" support association in the schoolyard. The name "Kinschbacher" is the Palatinate pronunciation of "Königsbacher" and underscores the self-confident local identity. The stand serves wines from the Hammer Sommer winery, one of the village's best-known producers.
Live music provides the atmosphere on all festival days — from traditional brass music to Palatinate cover bands. Culinary delights are dominated by hearty Palatinate classics: Saumagen, Bratwurst, Leberknödel, Quetschekuche, and Flammkuchen. The family-friendly size of the Kerwe — Königsbach is one of Neustadt's smaller wine villages — preserves a special intimacy that many Palatinate locals prefer over large folk festivals.
The 2026 edition of the Königsbacher Weinkerwe spans five festival days from June 19th to 23rd. The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
