20 concerts between the Hammerschmiede and the Monastery Church
Königsbronn — one of those historic monastery villages on the Ostalb that has retained its character. The municipality in the Heidenheim district, with its approximately 7,500 inhabitants, is located on the southern Swabian Jura escarpment, nestled between meadows, forests, and the Brenz valley. Here, the municipality, together with local organizers and music associations, organizes a 'Musiksommer' (Summer of Music) every year from June to September — an open concert series that spans three months and includes around 20 concert dates.
The special feature of the Musiksommer is the diversity of its venues, all located in close proximity: The Hammerschmiede (Smithy) from the 14th century — once an iron forge and today lovingly restored — forms an exceptionally acoustically appealing concert space. The former Cistercian monastery church, with its simple Gothic interior, offers the ideal atmosphere for classical music, choral works, and sound installations. In addition, brewery gardens, the Brenzpark, and other atmospheric locations are used — depending on the genre and the weather.
The programming is broad: The opening on June 20th is the „Blauer Abend“ (Blue Evening) — a deliberately poetic evening with concerts in several venues and blue illumination. On July 4th, the Sinfonietta Oberkochen-Königsbronn follows with a grand symphony concert. On July 8th, „Stimmen der Berge“ (Voices of the Mountains) celebrates its 10th anniversary — an event that presents Alpine folk music in a modern form. On August 2nd, the Jazz-Wander- und Radtag (Jazz Hiking and Cycling Day) invites you to explore the region and enjoy jazz concerts at various stops. The Musiksommer concludes on September 21st with the final concert.
The musical range is deliberately designed to appeal to different audiences: Classical music in the monastery church (chamber music, choral works, organ concerts), symphonic music with the Sinfonietta Oberkochen-Königsbronn as a regional ensemble, folk and traditional music with „Stimmen der Berge“ and themed folk evenings, jazz in open-air settings and on the Jazz Hiking and Cycling Day in cooperation with local caterers. Young artists and established ensembles share the stages.
Königsbronn is located in the Heidenheim district on the Brenz, a small tributary of the Danube. From 1303 to 1556, it was home to a Cistercian monastery, whose heritage is still visible today in the monastery church and the overall structure of the village. The Hammerschmiede bears witness to the iron processing that shaped the economic life of the community for centuries. Visitors to the Musiksommer can combine the concerts with hikes through the Brenz valley, a visit to nearby Heidenheim, or a tour to the nearby moated castle Katzenstein. An ideal summer destination for those who want to combine culture and nature.
The Königsbronn Musiksommer 2026 runs for three months, from the summer solstice on June 21 to September 21. Over this period, around 20 concerts are spread across various historical venues — primarily the Hammerschmiede and the Monastery Church, as well as brewery gardens and other atmospheric locations.
The 2026 program focuses on several highlights: the 'Blauer Abend' as a poetic opening, the Sinfonietta Oberkochen-Königsbronn as a major symphonic highlight, the 10th anniversary of 'Stimmen der Berge' as a folk music highlight, and the Jazz Hiking and Cycling Day as an open-air format. In addition, established and young ensembles will present classical music, chamber music, choral works, folk, and jazz.
