Charcoal Burner Tradition in the Spessart
For centuries, the Spessart was one of Franconia's most important charcoal-burning areas: in the extensive forests around Frammersbach, charcoal burners (Köhler) produced charcoal in their piles (Meiler) from wood, which was indispensable for smithies and glassworks. The Köhlerfest Frammersbach keeps this old craft alive and celebrates it every year over the Pentecost weekend.
Lighting the Charcoal Pile
The heart of the festival is the ceremonial lighting of the charcoal pile (Kohlenmeiler) on the festival Sunday. The stacked wood pile is ignited before the eyes of the visitors – an impressive and rare spectacle that makes Frammersbach's connection to charcoal burning visible.
Four Days of Festivities
From Friday to Whit Monday, the festival grounds transform into a major meeting point for the entire region. Rock bands, Franconian brass music, a children's program with craft activities, a coffee and cake bar, and hearty Franconian cuisine ensure a great atmosphere on all four days.
