48th SchängelMarkt — largest city and folk festival in Rhineland-Palatinate with four stages and 100,000 visitors
For over four decades, the Koblenzer SchängelMarkt has been the most important city festival in the Rhine city and the largest folk festival (Volksfest) in northern Rhineland-Palatinate. The name refers to the "Schängel," a clever Koblenz rascal, who today spits his water as the unmistakable symbol of the city at the Schängelbrunnen in the town hall courtyard.
The SchängelMarkt extends throughout the entire city center, utilizing seven central squares and streets: Jesuitenplatz, Münzplatz, Am Plan, Zentralplatz, Josef-Görres-Platz, and others. Four main stages with live bands from the rock, pop, Schlager, and carnival genres form the musical backbone. In addition, there are fashion shows featuring the autumn-winter collection of Koblenz retailers, an arts and crafts market, a farmers' and gourmet market, a children's and family area, and typical local gastronomy with wine, beer, and regional specialties.
The SchängelMarkt always takes place on the third weekend in September. The kickoff on Friday evening traditionally involves a beer tapping ceremony and a concert on the main stage. Saturday is the biggest festival day with all-day programming on all stages, and the biggest live concerts in the evening. Sunday is traditionally dedicated to families: a morning pint with brass music, a Sunday with open shops in the retail sector, and family entertainment until the early evening.
The SchängelMarkt in its current form dates back to the 1970s and has developed into an identity-defining city festival that the people of Koblenz celebrate with great pride. The 2026 edition will be the 48th since its revival. The Schängelbrunnen with the spitting rascal is the unofficial meeting point.
The 48th edition follows the proven structure of the SchängelMarkt. The complete stage and artist program will be published in the summer of 2026 by Koblenz Stadtmarketing (schaengelmarkt.de). The structure follows the established key points of previous years:
