Medieval Market Days at Ebstorf Monastery in Luther's Time with Craft Demonstrations and Concerts
The Ebstorf Monastery is one of the six Protestant women's convents of the former Lüneburg Heath monasteries. Founded as a Benedictine convent and converted into a Protestant women's foundation after the Reformation, it has a eventful history. The annual monastery festival, subtitled Monastery Festival in Luther's Time, commemorates this Reformation phase with a historically inspired program.
The Domänenplatz and parts of the monastery grounds transform into a lively market with stalls showcasing medieval crafts. Blacksmiths demonstrate the forging of horseshoes and tools, potters shape jugs on the wheel, wool processors show spinning and dyeing, bow makers carve bows. Traders offer leather goods, ceramics, jewelry, mead, honey, cheese, and bread from wood-fired ovens.
A special charm of the monastery festival lies in the concerts in the monastery church. The excellent acoustics of the historic space benefit sacred music, choirs, and instrumental ensembles. Concerts are also performed in the Nonnenchor (Nuns' Choir) — a famous area of the monastery with particularly warm acoustics. The repertoire ranges from Gregorian chant to Renaissance and Baroque music.
On stages around the monastery grounds, historical reenactments take place: scenes from 16th-century monastic life, discussions about Luther's theses, playlets with monks, nuns, and reformers. Jesters, minstrels, and dancers enliven the market with music, acrobatics, and theater.
Children can strike their own coins in hands-on activities, try archery, learn old games, or be transported into the world of the monastery era by storytellers. This makes the monastery festival a family festival with an educational focus.
Ebstorf is famous for the Ebstorfer Weltkarte (Ebstorf World Map), the largest medieval Mappamundi in the world (original lost in the war, replica in the monastery). The monastery festival translates this historical depth into a vivid experience, making history tangible for all senses.
