Summer Night Classical Open Air by the Young Fürth String Orchestra
The Südstadt Klassik Open Air is a deliberately accessible classical concert: no concert hall etiquette, no rigid rows of seats, but rather lawns, blankets, picnic baskets, and classical music under the open sky. The event takes place on a summer evening in early July on the park stage of the Fürth Music School in Südstadtpark. Free admission.
The main performers are the youth symphony orchestra of the Fürth Music School, the "Junge Fürther Streichhölzer". The ensemble brings together young musicians from the greater Fürth, Erlangen, and Nuremberg area who learn their instruments from renowned teachers. For many of these young talents, the open air is the biggest performance opportunity of the year — in front of several hundred spectators under the open sky.
The program ranges from classical standard literature (Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky) and romantic symphonic movements to film music arrangements and popular operetta melodies. The edition under the motto "A Fairytale Summer Night" focuses thematically on fairytale subjects — Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition", Tchaikovsky's ballet classics, Williams' film music themes, and similar pieces.
Südstadtpark is one of Fürth's large inner-city green spaces. The music school's park stage is a modern, open concert stage — ideal for open-air performances. The classical format fits into the diverse festival offerings of the city of Fürth, which also includes the International Klezmer Festival, the Fürth Festival Days, and the Jewish Film Festival.
The Klassik Open Air is explicitly designed as a "picnic concert": blankets, folding chairs, and picnic baskets are welcome, and bringing your own food is permitted. This positions the format as a family-friendly and accessible classical experience — even for listeners who have never been inside a classical concert hall.
The 2026 edition is themed "A Fairytale Summer Night" and focuses thematically on fairytale-narrative works — pieces like Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition", Tchaikovsky's suite from the ballet "Swan Lake", or film music arrangements from Disney and Studio Ghibli films are typical for such classical open-air editions.
The exact program and list of pieces will be published by the organizer closer to the date on tourismus-fuerth.de.
