Munich's largest open-air classical music festival in front of the Feldherrnhalle
Klassik am Odeonsplatz is one of Europe's most beautiful open-air classical music evenings. When the sun sets behind the Theatinerkirche on a July weekend and the Feldherrnhalle is bathed in warm evening light, Munich's most magnificent square and the surrounding historic buildings transform into an open arena. Up to 14,000 visitors enjoy two consecutive concert evenings here, which are in no way inferior in quality to the city's major concert halls.
The festival was founded in 2000 as a millennium concert by the state capital Munich, symbolizing German-French reconciliation. This unique idea quickly became a tradition: for 25 years now, the city's two major orchestras—the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Munich Philharmonic—have each performed one evening, accompanied by an international star conductor and a renowned soloist. The list of conductors reads like a who's who of the classical music world: Mstislav Rostropovich, Mariss Jansons, Lorin Maazel, Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Andris Nelsons, Kirill Petrenko, and many others have stood here.
What makes Klassik am Odeonsplatz so special is the symbiosis of grand symphonic sound and a summery open-air atmosphere. The acoustics of the Feldherrnhalle and the Residenz buildings create an astonishingly precise soundscape, complemented by elaborate stage and lighting productions. Mercedes-Benz Munich and BayernLB have been the main partners of the festival since its inception—a continuity that is unparalleled in the world of sponsorship.
For many Munich residents, Klassik am Odeonsplatz is more than a musical highlight: it is a gathering of the city's society, a picnic spot in front of the gates of the Residenz, and a showcase of Bavarian cultural power. Tickets are regularly sold out months before the concert.
The 26th edition of Klassik am Odeonsplatz once again features two of Germany's most renowned orchestras on two consecutive evenings. Simon Rattle, chief conductor of the BR Symphony Orchestra since 2023, opens with an opulent Gershwin evening, where pianist Kirill Gerstein unfolds the full rhythmic diversity of American music. On Sunday, Lahav Shani, designated chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic, takes the podium – with star violinist Janine Jansen and Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1, one of the most famous works in the violin repertoire.
As always, admission is only possible with a ticket, and the concert takes place in all weather conditions. The venue in front of the Feldherrnhalle offers an unparalleled view of the Theatinerkirche and the Residenz in good conditions.
