Sound Playground for the Next Generation
Klangfest originated from a simple observation: concerts for children are often versions of adult concerts adapted for children – not musical worlds specifically conceived for young ears. KinderKinder e.V., the Hamburg organizer for children's and youth culture, created Klangfest in 2017 as a platform that does the opposite: music here is conceived from the child's perspective, not simplified for the child. This makes the festival "uniquely German-wide" – as the organizers themselves put it.
Tenth Anniversary in 2026 – "Excitingly Different"
The 10th edition, from May 2nd to 4th, 2026, is themed "excitingly different" and brings together 9 productions from 3 countries at Kampnagel. The spectrum ranges from Elbtonal Percussion (opening concert) and Journey Home ("Best Jazz for Children and Adults") to interactive sound installations that children can directly engage with. The outdoor area becomes a sound playground, and the Haspa Music Stage offers free open-air concerts.
The Ohrlotsen – Children as Festival Reporters
A special feature of Klangfest is the "Ohrlotsen" (Sound Guides): a team of young Hamburg reporters who interview artists, guests, and organizers. Their contributions are published on kinderkinder.de and featured at a dedicated listening station on the festival grounds. This allows young people to experience music culture not just as consumers, but as active participants.
Concerts, Installations, Films
- Concerts with live bands from jazz, new music, and electronics
- Interactive sound installations in the outdoor area
- Free open-air concerts on the Haspa Music Stage
- Film screenings for young audiences
- Listening station by the Ohrlotsen with interviews and reports
Pay-what-you-feel – Culture for All
Tickets cost between 5 and 8 Euros – with the "Pay-what-you-feel" principle, enabling families with different budgets to experience the festival. The festival is supported by the Claussen-Simon Foundation and the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Klangfest is thus one of the most important funded children's cultural projects in the state of Hamburg.
