Short session without breaks, followed by socialising with music in the Electoral Palace
The Mainz hall carnival campaign consists of a variety of session formats in which established clubs develop their own focal points and variations of hall carnival. In addition to the grand ceremonial sessions — formal, festive, with prominent speakers — there are balls, costume sessions, pub evenings, and community sessions where several clubs cooperate and host a joint format. The KKV/Ranzengarde Community Session is an example of the latter category.
The Katholischer Kaufmännischer Verein Mainz (KKV) is a traditional Catholic professional association that has been active in Mainz since the 19th century and is firmly anchored in Mainz's carnival culture — many KKV members are simultaneously active in carnival clubs, and the association itself organises carnival events. The Mainzer Ranzengarde of 1837 e.V. is the oldest Mainz guard with almost 190 years of tradition. Both clubs cooperate on the community session, bringing together their respective club cultures, guards, speakers, and stage elements.
The format differs from the classic Mainz session structure through its compactness. Instead of the typical multi-part session with three or four program blocks and corresponding breaks, during which wine, beer, and session programmes are exchanged, the community session runs as a continuous program without breaks. The focus on about two hours of stage program gives the format a tighter dramaturgy. Immediately afterwards, the evening transitions into a dance and music segment, which incorporates the conviviality of a ball and keeps guests in the hall for a long time.
The venue is the Electoral Palace on Peter-Altmeier-Allee — one of the most beautiful and most used hall carnival venues in the city. With its historic halls, acoustic quality, and central location on the Rhine, it offers a worthy setting for the community session. The Friday date in the middle period of the campaign — early February — places the event in a dense phase with many parallel hall carnival events. For regular guests of the KKV and Ranzengarde, the community session is a fixed annual date; for carnival enthusiasts from the region, it is an opportunity to experience both club cultures in one format.
The 2026 edition follows the established community session concept. The Friday date in the middle period of the campaign (early February) places the event in a dense session phase with many parallel hall carnival events. The start at 7:11 PM follows the classic Mainz Elferzeit symbolism.
The program concept focuses on compactness: instead of the typical multi-part session with breaks, the stage program runs as a continuous block. Guards from the KKV and the Ranzengarde, speakers with political-satirical and humorous presentations in Mainz dialect, music and dance contributions follow in quick succession. Afterwards, the evening transitions seamlessly into a dance and music segment that keeps guests in the hall for a long time.
