The Mainzer Ranzengarde von 1837 e.V. is the oldest guard of the modern Mainz Carnival, carrying on an almost 190-year uninterrupted tradition. Founded in 1837 – at a time when the organized Mainz Carnival was taking shape – it has shaped the image of Mainz's ballroom and street carnival for generations. Its name derives from the "Ranze," a traditional Mainz term for the guardsmen's sash. In the Mainz club scene, the Ranzengarde holds a special rank: it is not only the oldest but also one of the most tradition-conscious guards with its own trademark, its own songs, and a firmly anchored identification with Mainz's Old Town.
The Kirschgartenfest is one of its winter events. It takes place every year in January in Mainz's Old Town, with the Kirschgarten as its symbolic center.
