Traditional Westerwald Kirchweih in Seck around the Patron Saint's Day of St. Kilian in early July
The municipality of Seck is located in the northern Westerwald, nestled in a gently rolling landscape with meadows, forests, and small lakes. The community, with around 800 inhabitants, belongs to the Rennerod collective municipality in the Westerwald district and cultivates a strong club culture. For generations, the Kirmes Seck has been the highlight festival of the summer, bringing together locals, those returning home, and guests from neighboring communities.
The date of the Kirmes follows the feast day of St. Kilian on July 8th. Kilian, the Apostle to the Franks, is an important saint for the Diocese of Limburg and neighboring Würzburg; many Westerwald parishes bear his name or celebrate his feast day. Therefore, it is traditionally celebrated on the weekend following St. Kilian's Day. In 2026, this weekend falls from July 10th to 13th – a Friday to Monday, thus preserving the classic four-day Kirmes schedule.
In 2025, the Kirmesgesellschaft Seck e.V. took over responsibility for the Kirmes under its own name for the first time. It thus continues the decades-long tradition that was previously carried by various organizers – the Junggesellenverein (bachelor's club), Burschenschaft (youth club), and village community. The aim of founding the association was to place the Kirmes on a stable organizational basis while simultaneously attracting young people from the village to participate in the customs.
The venue is the market square in the village center. Over four days, it transforms into a festival mile with beer tents, food stalls, a festival tent, and small amusement rides. The Kirmes is traditionally opened on Friday evening with the raising of the Kirmesbaum (fair pole). Saturday is dedicated to live music and dancing, Sunday features the festive church service, a convivial morning pint (Frühschoppen), and the family program, while Monday marks the festive conclusion with the Kirmes-Begraben (fair burial). Typical Westerwald dishes – Backes-Kartoffeln (baked potatoes), Hausmacherwurst (homemade sausage), Spießbraten (spit-roasted meat), and sweet Strieselchen (a type of pastry) – provide the culinary profile of the festival.
The Kirmes is more than a celebration – it is a source of identity and a carrier of tradition. Generations meet here, former residents return, and friendships are maintained that sustain village life throughout the year.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Kirmesgesellschaft Seck e.V. in early summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
